Guest Post:
OK, I'm going to tell you a little bit about my new book Cross My Heart which comes out in August. It's different!
Up until now I've always written about contemporary life and I've always tried to be entertaining, comic and light-hearted with serious touches. But you know, you grow up, you get inspired by different things, you want to stretch yourself as a writer.
So my new book is set during World War Two and it's about a teenage girl who joins the Resistance. It's aimed at teenagers, but I think everyone who likes the sound of this story will enjoy it. I really loved doing the research for this character. I read all kinds of books, diaries and letters by real Resistance fighters and I was hugely inspired by their courage and their determination.
I was also struck by how teenage they were. They hung out in cafes, had crushes, gossiped and tried to lead some sort of normal life while all this turmoil was going on about them.
I can never resist a romantic touch, so that's very much part of the book. But the story is exciting too; when the price of capture is torture, imprisonment and possible death, the stakes really couldn't be higher. I absolutely love the cover!
It's always a tricky moment when publishers show you the cover they have in mind for the story you've been so involved with. This one, with the heartbreakingly pretty and oh-so serious girl, just could not be better.
It's chilling. I immediately feel very afraid for her and desperate to know more.
